The official Trump (TRUMP) token and World Liberty Financial's governance token (WLFI) were the two worst performers among the top 100 cryptocurrencies on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. According to CoinMarketCap data cited by Cointelegraph around 5:32 pm UTC, TRUMP fell 17% over 24 hours to $1.33, while WLFI dropped more than 7% to $0.047.

The decline came right after a wave of Democratic victories in the US midterm elections, including a surprise win in Texas. Democrats secured control of both the House and Senate, flipping both chambers from Republicans. The result triggered an immediate sell-off in tokens that had previously benefited from positive sentiment tied to Trump.

Bitcoin and Ether Rallied Instead

Strikingly, the broader crypto market moved in the opposite direction from Trump-linked tokens. Bitcoin (BTC) rose more than 4% over 24 hours to around $80,500, while Ether (ETH) climbed 6% to $2,433. Other major coins also gained: BNB rose 3%, XRP climbed 2.6%, and Solana (SOL) gained 2.5%. The total crypto market capitalization rose 3.4% to $2.69 trillion.

This divergence underlines how the market separates mainstream crypto assets from tokens whose value depends heavily on a specific political figure. TRUMP is the president's official memecoin, launched in January 2025, while WLFI is the governance token of a Trump family-backed DeFi project launched in 2024. Both tokens once rode a wave of enthusiasm when sentiment around Trump ran high among retail investors, but Wednesday's move shows that reliance can cut the other way too.

Why the Midterm Result Matters for Crypto

US midterm elections take place halfway through a president's term and decide who controls the House and Senate for the next two years without replacing the sitting president. When the president's own party loses both chambers, as happened to Trump here, pushing an agenda through Congress becomes far harder because the opposition can block bills and ramp up oversight.

Per Cointelegraph, the results could make it harder for Trump to advance his crypto plans while also inviting more scrutiny of his family's crypto businesses. Analysts say the losses also raise a broader question about whether political sentiment alone can sustain demand for Trump-linked tokens over time.

Why Political Tokens React Differently

Benjamin Sarquis Peillard, founder and CEO of Cap, a DeFi platform focused on stablecoin yields, told Cointelegraph that investors are treating politically linked tokens differently from other crypto assets.

"Bitcoin and other established assets respond to a combination of liquidity, institutional flows and macroeconomic conditions, while politically linked tokens can be more sensitive to shifts in expectations around Washington," he said. "Even as the broader market recovers, those tokens may face selling pressure if investors begin reassessing their risk exposure."

Peillard added that while the sell-off could reflect a short-term reaction to the election results, the bigger question is what sustains demand for these tokens beyond their association with a political figure. That question matters because neither TRUMP nor WLFI has a use case that sets it apart much from other tokens in its category, a memecoin and a DeFi governance token, aside from the name attached to it.

The Sell-Off Spreads to Other Trump Family Tokens

The pressure wasn't limited to TRUMP and WLFI. MELANIA, the memecoin associated with First Lady Melania Trump, dropped nearly 13% to around $0.066. A separate token named VANCE, linked in name to Vice President JD Vance though without any confirmed official connection, fell nearly 12%.

The political memecoin sector's total market capitalization fell more than 16% in a single day to $477 million, according to CoinMarketCap data. Trading volume in the sector jumped 123% to $437 million, a sign that holders rushed to exit while others tried to buy the dip. A volume spike alongside falling prices usually points to a market searching for a new equilibrium rather than a one-directional panic.

CLARITY Act's Future Looks Even More Uncertain

The election results also raise questions about US crypto legislation. The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, commonly known as the CLARITY Act, is a bill meant to establish a regulatory framework for digital assets. It previously failed to advance in the Senate this year after falling short of the 60 votes needed. Democrats had pushed for stronger ethics provisions and safeguards against conflicts of interest tied to Trump's crypto ventures, while four Republicans also opposed advancing the bill.

With the Senate now in Democratic hands, clearing that 60-vote threshold could get even harder without bigger concessions on the ethics provisions that were rejected earlier. "The midterm results introduce a new layer of regulatory uncertainty, particularly around the pace and direction of digital asset legislation," Peillard said. "For politically linked tokens, that uncertainty can have a more immediate impact because investor sentiment is partly tied to expectations around the political environment."

The crypto sector still has support, and opposition, from lawmakers in both parties. Peillard said the more important question for the industry at large is whether Congress can establish a durable regulatory framework regardless of which party holds power.

What It Means for Traders

For anyone holding or watching politically linked tokens like TRUMP, WLFI, MELANIA, or VANCE, volatility likely isn't over. The 123% jump in trading volume across the political memecoin sector suggests a lot of positions are changing hands, not a sign of price stabilization.

Worth watching going forward: how the CLARITY Act's status evolves under a Congress now controlled by Democrats in both chambers, further comments from industry figures about risk exposure in political tokens, and whether Bitcoin and Ether can hold their rally near $80,500 and $2,433 amid continued regulatory uncertainty. The $477 million market cap level for the political memecoin sector is also a rough benchmark to watch for whether the sector stabilizes or keeps shrinking in the days ahead.

The divergence between established crypto assets and politically tied tokens also offers a useful rough gauge: how much of a token's price is driven by political sentiment versus real project fundamentals or adoption. When political sentiment turns, as it did after this midterm, that kind of token tends to be more exposed to a correction than assets with a broader user base and institutional flows behind them.
